Mental Health Care Plans (MHCPs)
Teen psychology sessions may be eligible for Medicare rebates with a GP Mental Health Care Plan. If you're eligible for a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) through your GP, you may receive a Medicare rebate of $141.85 per session for up to 10 sessions per calendar year with a clinical psychologist. This reduces out-of-pocket costs and makes therapy more accessible.

What Is A Mental Health Care Plan?
What is a MHCP?
A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP), also known as a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP), is a structured plan designed by a qualified healthcare professional, such as a GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician. It is intended to support individuals dealing with mental health concerns by providing them access to Medicare-subsidised mental health services. Australian residents with a valid Medicare card can use an MHCP to access affordable psychological treatments.

Mental Health Care Plans fall under Australia's Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS), ensuring patients can receive professional care at a lower cost.
What Are the Benefits of a Mental Health Care Plan?
Obtaining an MHCP can significantly reduce out-of-pocket expenses for psychological services. Through an MHCP, you may be eligible for up to 10 Medicare-subsidised psychology sessions per calendar year. The first referral covers an initial block of 6 rebated sessions, and if needed, your GP can provide a review referral for an additional 4 sessions.

It's important to note:
-
MHCP sessions do not carry over to the next calendar year.
-
The MHCP remains valid for 2 years from the date it is issued, ensuring ongoing support when needed.

How to Get a Mental Health Care Plan
To obtain an MHCP, simply schedule an appointment with your GP or an eligible referring specialist (such as a psychiatrist or paediatrician). During your visit, your healthcare provider will conduct a brief mental health assessment to determine whether you qualify for a plan. Be sure to mention at the time of booking that your appointment is specifically for a Mental Health Care Plan to allow adequate time for your assessment.

If you believe you may benefit from psychological support, don't hesitate to discuss your concerns with your doctor. Accessing mental health care is a crucial step toward improving your well-being.
